In fact there is not a single reliable (read tested engine) enthusiast car out there within a budget of 15 lakhs INR.

I started looking out for an enthusiast car in 2019. Budget was less than 15 lakhs INR and the car needed to be fast with good handling and precise steering. Started to test drive a few cars, and I was not very impressed.

Škoda Rapid 1.6 MPI

The first car that I test drove was Škoda Rapid Petrol 1.6 MPI. Though I am a diesel lover (for the torque it offers) but considering the recent shift of our government towards Petrol, I was a bit skeptical to get a diesel now. Also, now that I can own a Petrol without burning a hole in my pocket it made more sense to go for petrol considering the difference in price with that of Diesel is now less & Petrol is being considered a cleaner fuel. The car was good for the initial pickup. Nothing particular about the mid-range or the top. Steering was good and the handling package was also very impressive. Seating & Stance was very low but it made the car more stable and sticky on the road. Rapid also looked premium and the fit-finish along with the quality of interior/panels was quite sturdy. If you factor out the engine linear performance unlike Turbo Diesels, this car was a very appealing package. The Problem was the After Sales Service of Škoda, which is by default horrendous. Car parts in general are costly but then considering their quality which is good, this cost is justified.

The car looks elegant and feels premium inside-out. Driving dynamics are also impressive. Reliability and After Sales Experience is a downer though.

The Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI

Ford Freestyle

Next I test drove Ford Freestyle 1.2 Petrol which was quite a new launch. I had driven the Diesel one, rented from Zoomcar once during a trip. Diesel was very impressive as usual. I thought this character would continue in the newly launched Dragon Series Petrol as well but that was not the case. For whatever reasons petrol was not punchy like the other petrol cars in the segment and there was an inherent lag in the initial RPMs or when starting off from standstill. Probably the Traction Control System was in place by default during the start but still I was not wheel-spinning like that of Faisal Khan. I was just trying to start off as I would normally drive in the city. One more reason that I think for the initial hitch while starting off might be the Kerb weight of the vehicle. It is not lighter like the Japanese & Korean rivals. But unlike the engine, the handling and steering feedback was very good as expected from Ford vehicles. Overall the vehicle was a very potent handler with an average engine performance. Quality levels were not premium but were also not out of place. Panels felt like they were build to last. Road presence of this vehicle was quite good and this is a real head turner.

Freestyle is a smart looking hatch with high ground clearance. This gives it a good stance and aggressive look. Interiors are however not premium. Handling and stability control is probably the best in the segment.

The Ford Freestyle. Look at the raised stance which gives it rugged look.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Then I drove Maruti Suzuki Swift Petrol 1.2 though I was not going to buy one as there have been enough Maruti in the house. Although the product is not bad yet the latest generation is lighter and sleeker than the outgoing model. Maruti Suzuki has always been bashed for tin-can quality of cars but this one actually felt like one. Steering was featherlight and the car was very nimble (read light) in the city. Also, the cabin did not really appeal to me and the door pads now became sleeker as compared to the older generation beefier ones. This added to the increased outside noise in the cabin. Overall this is still a good package for first time buyers or fanboys but did not appeal to me as I have owned the older models which were definitely better.

The 3rd Generation Maruti Suzuki Swift looks fresh from outside but is not very interesting inside. The driving dynamics have also been taken away since the first generation model.

The new 3rd Generation Maruti Suzuki Swift

Hyundai i20

Next was the Hyundai i20 Petrol and the moment it lunged ahead I knew exactly what not to buy. No offence to the owners of this vehicle but in my opinion this is the worst car that can happen to any enthusiast. Pickup, handling, steering, seating everything was off. I had driven the new generation Verna & the older Creta Diesel and have had similar experience there. Creta though was slightly better in terms of handling and steering feedback. I would like to point out the laid back behaviour of Hyundai Sales staff here who were reluctant to dive into deeper conversation.

The Hyundai Kid looks premium inside out and has also got a lot of features but fails in the enthusiast factor.

The most non-enthusiast car in India

After these test drives the year 2019 ended on a good note with a visit to the USA. Come 2020 and there was Corona everywhere. Life came to a halt. Only Work-From-Home and Work-For-Home were trending.

Fast-forward to August 2020, the itch for a new car started again. There had been few new car launches by then even when the industry was hit by low sales due to Corona.

Škoda Rapid 1.0 TSI

The first test drive of 2020 was the new Škoda Rapid 1.0 TSI. Škoda again. God knows why I love this car. There was a new showroom in the city and
I went straight inside. Looked at the one which was in the showroom and nothing was changed except the engine. Fast-forward to the test drive, which was delayed by a good hour, courtesy of Škoda Sales which is as horrible as the After Sales, and I felt at home because nothing was different in the interior department. Driving it however was a different experience. It was a 3 cylinder 1.0 Litre TSI Turbocharged Petrol only engine. At the start, it felt like a 3 cylinder due to the vibrations but that’s about it. Press the accelerator and this engine was eager to gain speed. Although the turbo lag continued in the initial RPMs below ~1800 yet past that it surged ahead with good speed. It was fast, a good handler and with very good dynamics but the reliability factor of ASS was missing. The Rider variant had added to the value-for-money factor but then the Škoda After Sales Service remained unknown and adding to it the long term reliability of this new TSI engine.

The new Rapid 1.0 TSI regains its premium & elegant styling. The engine however this time is very aggressive though with a slight turbo lag. Even with the 3-pot motor Škoda has really mastered the NVH levels.

The Škoda Rapid 2020 1.0 TSI. The first car that I wanted to own, Ford Ecosports was here. Though I had driven the Diesel rented via Zoomcar, but I was now more interested in the Petrol after watching rave reviews of the new dragon 1.5 engine. Started off and the first thing I noted was the vibrations in this car. Though this was also a 3-cylinder unit but it did sound coarser than the Rapid 1.0 TSI. On speeding up, the entire car started shaking. Wheel balance & alignment was off. Vibrations in the car also filled my mind. Probably this vehicle was a one off case but at 4000 KMS on the odometer it would have been as new as stock. Nobody would buy this car after test-driving this TD vehicle. This test drive spoiled my mood for the day. It also planted second thoughts of owing Ecosports Petrol.

Ford Ecosports was and still is the best handling C-SUV in the segment. It still looks fresh and aggressive. This one could have been THE HOT C-SUV if it was for the Diesel TDCI or the Ecoboost 1.0 engine. Interior is premium and handling is spot on. If only the petrol engine could have been better.

The Ford Ecosports S 2020

The Mahindra Experience | XUV 300

I called up Mahindra for a test drive, but they never bothered to call me back. This one had more bells and whistles, was longer and wider than the outgoing model. Seats felt very premium though the dashboard and other panel elements could have been better designed. Test drove and was very happy with the eager nature of this vehicle to push forward. But it was not enthusiastic by any standards. Just a reliable, premium looking and probably low maintenance sedan. A safe investment on vehicles which will serve the owner for years.
I am sorry to report but this Honda City has lost its charm. The arrow head design of the older model is still very alluring & even with the dual overhead cam-shaft the NVH levels were higher. The premium which this vehicle demands is now not worth it.

The New Honda City 2020 is a segment above. It exudes class and has the best in segment reliability. But the quality levels have for sure dropped a notch.

The Segment Leader | Honda City 2020

Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI | The Hot Hatch

Next I went in to check one of the hot hatch in India, Polo 1.0 TSI. It had the exact same engine as that of Rapid 1.0 TSI. In fact all the VW/Škoda new generation vehicles are now relying on this award-winning engine. The Test drive vehicle was not available and hence instead of Polo I drove Vento. I immediately fell in love with this vehicle. Yes, even when I knew it had the same engine as that of Rapid. The Vento was much smoother to drive and looked more enthusiastic in the handling department. Great discounts were also being offered on this. But again the same reliability & VW ASS issue loomed my mind. Though Vento did make it to the top contender on my list.

Polo and Vento twins have been the one of the most elegant looking cars in their respective segment. And now with the new 1.0 TSI engine they do perform enthusiastically as well. However, the reliability issues are a major deterrent.

The Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI 2020 | The only hot petrol hatch available right now

Conjecture

After all these test drives I wanted to ponder over all the vehicles and decide on a worthy ride. Well unfortunate or not, I was still confused and was not being able to decide on a single vehicle, mainly due to the fact that there was not a single reliable enthusiast petrol car available in the market. Another ambiguity was on the registration charges. I am living in my home- town right now but my work location is Bangalore and it made more sense to buy the vehicle from Bangalore. The reason for that is Karnataka has a higher road tax as compared to the rest of the Nation and cops fine cars from other states. I did not want to be the odd one out in the middle of KA cars.

But the question remained the same even when I tried to put aside the high road tax and the location constraints. Is there really a reliable enthusiast car in India within 15 lakhs ? Apparently no right now.

Škoda/VW After Sales and the reliability of their new TSI engine is a hit or miss. Long term reliability is still unknown and the 3-cylinder engines for that price does not provide confidence.

Ford petrol again being 3-cylinder and the experience from a bad test drive vehicle does not inspires the confidence to go ahead. Diesel is a performer though. More on that later.

Honda, no matter how much I hate to say it, has become the new age Maruti. Quality levels have degraded & the design language has become predictable. The new City for sure is not charming enough.

I did want to check out the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Petrol, but I was trying to move away from MS. Otherwise, this makes for a good contender.

Hyundai(s) never appealed to me in terms of driving dynamics.

TATA does not have any enthusiast car right now. Enough for the masses though.

Mahindra is still conquering its After Sales Service.

The future of Renault/Nissan is still unknown.

When I started looking out for an enthusiast vehicle I was mainly looking for something in the league of Fiat Linea T-Jet and the Abarth Punto. I do not see any such offering right now in the market for Indians. Indian car market for sure is now moving towards everyday average handling but feature loaded cars.

One machine that comes somewhat close in my assessment is the Ford Figo Diesel. Again Diesels are a gone business now in 2020.

Right now I am still contemplating my choices and also looking at the pre-owned car market. Hope to see a worthy contender sooner and with plans to get back to Bangalore, I might be laying my hands on a meany machine soon.

Will keep the post updated with more test drives in the future unless I find THE ONE.

I started looking out for an enthusiast car in 2019.
